As the end of another year approaches, we thought it would be interesting to dust off our crystal ball and peer into the future to see what 2017 may have in store for the network space. In a nutshell, 2017 is shaping up to be all about network visibility and forensics for managing network performance and and efficiently investigating security threats.

The same but different

2017 will also be a year in which solution vendors come under increasing pressure to integrate products into standardized work flows while providing unique value-add features that address cyber threats. At Savvius we achieve this balance by adhering to commonly accepted industry standards and by not trying to reinvent the wheel where technologies are readily available in the market. At the same time, we are able to stand out by applying our expertise in packet analytics and automated data collection to provide industry-leading troubleshooting and security capabilities that result in rapid resolution of network issues.

The technologies supporting the networking space have become quite mature and well-established over the past decade. That’s not to say that the industry has been stagnant. Far from it. During the same period, we’ve welcomed many positive advances in throughput, speed and reliability, which have benefited all users. However, as the industry has consolidated over the last few years, driven by a flurry of mergers and acquisitions, it is unlikely that we’ll see any breakthrough new technologies appear. Rather, we are likely to see more emphasis on ways that network data can be used in troubleshooting all manner of network and security investigations. Having said that, we can expect to see some existing trends continue to dominate headlines throughout the year. Here are a few topics that we should be seeing more of in 2017:

2017 Networking Predictions

  1. 2017 will be the year of the network engineer. The network engineer ensures that the network – at the heart of every organization today – performs optimally, and is a secure resource every business requires. The network engineer is the answer to network troubleshooting and security investigations.
  1. Network teams will become proactive in order to ensure that networks don’t go down. In an era when requirements and expectations continue to rise, network engineers will need to have a global view of QoS for their stakeholders and users. There has been a shift from ‘reactive’ problem solving (based on complaints and trouble-tickets) to proactive, with network engineers having tools that will show them where and how a network is having issues before users are even aware. This ability to anticipate problems in more complex environments will help ensure that the network of 2017 performs optimally. The enterprise network represents the heartbeat of the organization. It is dynamic.
  1. Network complexity will rise faster than network reliability. At the same time, security incidents will increase faster than security teams can handle them. So network and security teams need to be more embedded and cooperative. This network data is key to efficient security investigations.
  1. On the wireless front, commercialization of LTE-U will move forward. It’s still the Wild West right now, but there will be user benefits as more investment flows into the market from carriers wanting to offload capacity (especially at high-density locations such as stadiums).
  1. As we see an increasing number of offices offering connectivity only via Wi-Fi, the ability to manage Wi-Fi effectively will become even more important.
